In the current economy, expenses add up quickly and may make it hard to move forward financially. You may have already considered canceling your land-line phone in favor of your mobile phone. However a new breakthrough in telecommunications may help even more. Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP is a new technology that combines the telephone systems and the Internet. VoIP free calls are made between computers because the voice is transmitted in digital signals over an Internet connection.

For the average consumer, reducing telephone costs is a good idea. If you travel internationally, you know how mobile phone costs seem to rise incrementally when you are overseas. However with VoIP calls, or dramatically reduced costs for international calls are the norm. Perhaps you have a teen-ager who uses a tremendously large percentage of the minutes available on your family’s mobile phone plan. Connect the mobile phone to the VoIP network, and you will have a teen-ager making VoIP calls, rather than expensive overages on your mobile phone bill each month.

There are many business applications as well. VoIP free calls can dramatically reduce business costs. When the cost for all phones being used by the business are added up, then subtracted from the expense column, a huge savings is evident. Staying connected to your business employees and associates is important. Internet connections are available worldwide, where regular or mobile telephone connections may not be. By staying connected, deals can be reached, questions can be answered, and business will increase. Lowering costs through VoIP calls allows a business to lower prices charged for merchandise or services, which provides the company with a competitive edge.

VoIP service can be made through existing mobile phones that are routed through the computer. This eliminates all but the cost of the actual phone and minimal fees. Special adapters are also available for regular analog phones allowing them to be used with a digital Internet connection. Whether for business or personal use, these adaptors allow VoIP service to be made anywhere, anytime. There are also IP phones that can directly connect to an Internet connection and don’t even need a Voip network. These can be used throughout the world to connect to any other Voip enabled phone.

This exciting new technology opens a world of opportunity to both businesses and individuals. VoIP free calls can be made from virtually anywhere in the world. By investigating the cost savings involved, one can see that Voip is definitely the telecommunications revolution one wants to be a part of.

Thanks to the voice over IP (VoIP) calling, also refers to as VoIP technology, the long distance calls are no more long distance calls. This innovative technology has changed the basic fundamentals of long distance communication. Voice over IP phones refers to the transmitting device technology, in fact segment of technologies that deliver voice-enabled communications over IP networks (Internet) and other packet-controlled networks. Voice over IP is also used with few other globally used terms such as IP telephony, voice over broadband, Internet telephony, broadband phone, and broadband telephony.

For the origination of an Internet-driven telephone call the analog voice signal is converted to its digital format. It is then compressed and translated to Internet protocol packets for transmission over the Internet. The same protocol procedure is reversed at the receivers end. This is a useful and enterprising expertise that is able to utilize standard and normal Internet connections for making almost free phone calls. If phone calls are being made over the broadband connection with the help of Voice over IP phone software then that means that soon telephone companies are going to suffer severe setbacks.

Some companies have already taken a front seat and are making steady growth in this medium. This clever technology is all likely to replace the conventional telephony system completely. There are two different mediums where the VoIP service finds their most common applications -

Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA) – This medium allows for connecting a usual phone to desktop computer or to the Internet connection.

Computer-to-computer — This is the easiest and the most common way to connect to computers with the help of Voice over IP. This way calls can be made anywhere, even the long distance calls. The things required in this set up are – Voice over IP phone enabled computer, microphone, sound card, speakers, and an Internet connection. There are no charges levied in making calls computer to computer except for what is paid for Internet connection.

Benefits of Voice over IP

The VoIP calling technology enjoys immense benefit of minimal operational and infrastructural cost. Voice over IP is a flexible way of communication that can transmit several telephone calls over a single broadband Internet connection without adding extra lines. There aren’t many pre-requisites for developing a functioning VoIP calling facility. It also offers many other integrated functions like video communications, data file exchange, audio conferencing, address books, call forwarding, automatic redialing, etc. In simpler words, it facilitates more interactive communication.

Voice over IP phones is indeed a radical technology that is soon going to replace the basic fundamental global telephony systems.

With today’s rapidly increasing technology, there are many new ways to communicate with people all over the world. One of these new technologies that has emerged with the invention and improvement of the Internet is Voice over IP or VoIP Calling. VoIP is a term for several different transmission technologies that use IP networks, like the Internet, to deliver voice communications. It is basically a way to make phone calls over the Internet.

One of the main benefits associated with VoIP Calling is that it is much cheaper than traditional phone line calling. VoIP can be as much as 40% lower on local calls and up to 90% less for international calls. Many VoIP companies offer unlimited talk time for a fixed amount. This means that regardless of how much you talk the cost will be the same.

Another large benefit of VoIP calling is that multiple people can be connected into the same conversation. This is useful for companies that set up frequent conference calls. The hardware for VoIP communication is also cheaper than hardware associated with traditional calling. All that is needed is a computer with a microphone, speakers and the Internet. Most offices already have all these components in abundance. This means that companies employing VoIP can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars because they don’t have to purchase individual phones and have a phone network run to every employee.

Since VoIP calls are done over networks, like the Internet, much more data can be transferred. This makes many more things possible than with traditional phone calls. With VoIP you can transfer images, video and even text along with the sound. This makes video conferencing possible as well as text for people that cannot hear.

Since VoIP is a fairly new technology there are a few drawbacks. Some of the things that early adopters of VoIP calling have complained about are: the sound quality, dependency on bandwidth, poor connections and the need for a constant power supply. Another complaint is that emergency calls (calls to 911) are not offered by all VoIP service providers.

Despite the drawbacks of VoIP calls, it is quickly gaining wide acceptance in many different businesses and homes. The technology is quickly advancing and correcting things that people have had problems with in the past. VoIP is quickly gaining momentum with the different Internet services, like Skype, that offer calling and video for very low prices. Look for the technology to continue to increase and spread through the business and home industry.

to millions of worldwide users at any time of the day or night. It is simply to join and simple to use. I suggested that one of my students join Skype because his wife was making daily long distance calls from Southern California to Mexico and the phone bill was getting out of control. After he joined Skype the long distance charges dropped to zero and everyone in the family was happy because his wife could now talk as long and as often as she wished. There are even Skype mobile phones available now that can connect you to Skype at Wi-Fi hotspots like Starbucks, which are now everywhere including many overseas. So mobile Skype phone could be a cheap and convenient way of keeping in touch when you are traveling over seas. Skype even has an inexpensive option for connecting to landlines for those who are not signed up with Skype.

Google Voice

Google is developing a new free VoIP network service where you can select a number and have it forwarded to all your existing numbers. You can receive and make web based calls anywhere is the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) free of charge. They even have low cost overseas options. The service is in Beta and by invite only (invites are still available for the asking) but someday should be open to everyone.

Mobile Phone Providers

Most mobile phone providers are now developing and offering VoIP options on their mobile phones and you will be able to make free calls from hotspots or over data links through the provider. This again would be very helpful for the overseas travelers.

Free VOIP Gateway

There are even software options that can be implemented for developing a PC software VoIP gateway solution. These are Linux applications based on the free Open Source initiatives so you will find a very active community of developers and users to help if you are wanting to have a VoIP gateway to service your business with all the business features that you would need.

Since all calls are now converted to digital and sent over switched network systems it will not be too long when all voice and data merge. The VoIP calls now are such high quality that you cannot tell if you are on a voice or data network making your free VoIP calls.

regular analog phone to the digital VoIP data Internet circuits. Some adapters connect through USB to a computer that is connected to the Internet. Some are stand alone phone adapters that can be wired or wireless and connect to the Internet via an IP routed port. The adapters use Quality of Service (QoS) which provides priority to voice communications to limit lag. Otherwise the possible lag would interrupt and distort the communications.

VoIP Phone Adapters

The Cisco Linksys VoIP phone adapter is one of the best. They can quickly and easily convert existing analog phones and faxes to IP data circuits. The Cisco Linksys adapters have been very popular with many good reviews for reliable connections to any VoIP service.

The Zoom VoIP telephone adapter is another entry into this popular and competitive market. D-Link also has some product offerings that are showing good performance for the price.

The phones and services are showing some real promise and even the cellular providers are making VoIP service available in their phones for Wi-Fi hot spot areas. These feature can be very valuable for overseas travelers who want to keep in touch with family and friends at very reasonable cost.

technology used to transmit voice communications over the Internet. Just like data is broken up into packets the voice communication is divided into packets and sent out over the Internet. To keep the packets in order and traveling quickly there is another supporting technology called QoS (quality of service) which prioritizes the data and minimize any latency or jitter that would degrade the call. Internet telephony is another term used with this technology that describes the services provided, such as, voice, fax, and messaging that converts voice to digital packets.

The VoIP market has grown much since 2004 with many new market services being added allowing subscribers to make and receive calls over broadband Internet access just as they would using normal PSTN (public switched telephone networks). The DID (direct inbound dialing) provides comparable telephone service with major carries at considerably reduced costs. Low flat monthly fee contracts allow for unlimited calling with very low additional rates to other countries. Also with many additional services available it makes VoIP an attractive alternative to POTS (plain old telephone service).

There are three common VoIP adapters used to connect subscribers:

ATA (analog telephone adapter)

The ATA allows for converting existing phone service to be used with Internet connections. Most users would not notice any difference to the new service except for the lower flat rate cost.

Dedicated VoIP Phone

The dedicated VoIP phone allows direct connection to the Internet and without the need of a computer. These VoIP phones can be either wired or wireless connected by Ethernet to a router or LAN. These phones require a service provider for connection.

Softphone

A softphone is computer enabled phone using software without the need of any other hardware except a headset. Skype is a very popular VoIP Internet phone service that is used with a softphone running from a computer enabled with the appropriate software.

Growing Market

The variety of VoIP adapter has grown over the recent years to include many manufactures. Cisco, Linksys, Motorola, and Logitech are just a few of the many manufactures of VoIP adapters on the market now. The VoIP service providers has also grown and become very competitive with low start-up fees and low monthly rates. Now is a good time to be looking at this alternative technology to replace your POTS.
